Table Tennis Picks; Hugo Calderano the big name to beat at WTT Contender Doha 2023

The latest WTT Contender event is taking place in Doha this week, and with some of the biggest names in Table Tennis taking part, we thought it was time to check in on the competition and look for some good value Table Tennis betting picks.

The opening couple of days are taken up by qualifying rounds, with the main draws getting under way later in the week. In the men’s and women’s singles competitions, the main draw starts from the Round of 32. While in all three doubles competitions, the main draw starts at the Round of 16 stage.

Men’s Singles

In the men’s competition, five of the world’s top 20 ranked players are taking part. Brazil’s Hugo Calderano at number 7 is the highest ranked player, and as a result he goes into the competition as the first seed.

In January 2022, Calderano peaked at number three in the world. He has since dropped down the rankings. But winning competitions like this can only help see him improve his ranking again.

Calderano hasn't done his cause any harm this season either. Only last Sunday he won the WTT Contender Durban single's title, defeating Yaroslav Zhmudenko 4-0 in an enthralling final.

ing Calderano from inside the top 20 in the world is Quadri Aruna (WR 14), Lim Jonghoon (16), Chuang Chih-Yuan (17) and Jang Woojin (18).

Women’ Singles

In the women’s event, four of the world’s top 20 are competing. The highest ranked player in Doha is ’s Nina Mittelham who is ranked 14, and seeded one in this event. Mittelham is ed at the Lusail Sports Arena by Jia Nan Yuan of (WR 16), Jeon Jihee (18) and Shin Yubin (19).

Men’s Doubles

In the Men’s doubles, the number one seeds are Koreans Jang Woojin and Lim Jonghorn. The duo have a combined pair rank (R) of 14. Lee Sangsu and Cho Daeseong are seeded second, and they have a R of 31.

In a competition that has Koreans seeded one to three, the next pair are Che Seungmin and An Jaehyun. The number three seeds have a combined pair rank of 34.

Women’s Doubles

The women’s doubles are not as Korean dominated as the men’s, but aren’t too far behind. The top seeds are Sofia Polcanova of Austria, and Bernadette Szocs of Romania. They have a combined pair rank of 18.

The Korean duos of Lee Zion and Choi Hyojoo (R of 32), along with Jeon Jihee and Shin Yubin (R 38) are two and three respectively.

Mixed Doubles

And finally, in the mixed doubles, it is the French duo of Emmanuel Lebesson and Jia Nan Yuan with a R of 13 who are the top seeds. They are followed by India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaren and Manika Batra, who have a R of 21. With the third seeds coming from Hong Kong, Wong Chun Ting, and Doo Hoi Kem, with a R of 25.

On Tuesday we have the likes of Oleg Popov in action. Popov’s first fixture of the day is against Roman Antonov. In the match betting, Popov is the favorite at -191, with Antonov at +148.

Popov lost his final match on Monday evening, 3-1 to Petr Polyakov. He defeated Polyakov by the same scoreline earlier in the day, in what was his fifth successive win. Popov will be looking to bounce back with a win over Antonov, who himself is on a four match winning run, all achieved yesterday at the same venue.

This is one of the stand out clashes of the day, and we think that Popov is going to get back to winning ways. Popo has won nine of his last twelve matches, so we know he is in good form at the moment.

As for Antonov, he has won five and lost six of his last eleven matches. Three of those defeats were before Christmas, meaning in the new year his record reads 5-3. Even so, we’re happy to back Popov to win this match and make him our Table Tennis betting pick.
